Connecticut, USA...  Frederick Winters, St. Louis 1904.  Innovations at the St. Louis 1904 Olympic Games included the awarding of gold, silver and bronze medals for first, second and third place.  Winters of the U.S. won silver in the newly introduced Dumbbells contest, which involved nine lifting events, followed by a show of strength of the competitor's choice.  Winters opted to perform six one-arm push-ups while carrying 105 pounds on his back!  Wow!  And he only came in 2nd place - who was the Superman who took the gold?
